The BMW Races in Rosehill

The BMW Races take place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. This racecourse is in the suburb of Rosehill, 23 km’s west of Sydney’s city centre. The BMW takes place every year in either March or April and is a big draw card to locals and international supporters. This high-end horse race event is quite popular amongst New Zealand contenders as well, so it’s common to see a rather large New Zealand influence on the day. Hundreds of contenders and supporters partake in the event. There are additional activities available to supporters to add to the experience including food and wine stalls.

The History of the BMW Horse Races

The BMW, also known as and registered as the H E Tancred Stakes is a group 1 weight for age horse race at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. H E Tancred, or Henry Eugene Tancred, used to be a chairman at the Sydney Turf Club, and it’s he who this race is named after. The race itself was established in 1963 and has gone through 7 different names throughout the years including the H E Tancred Cup, the H E Tancred Stakes, the Tancred Stakes, the BMW International Stakes, The BMW Stakes, the Mercedes Classic and finally since 2002 and onwards they’ve landed on the name The BMW. In 2002 the BMW car manufacturers became the predominant sponsor of the event hence the name ‘The BMW’.

BMW Events Information

In 1963 the race started off with a 2 400m race distance and still holds that same distance today. The BMW race is for thoroughbred horses only, and only takes entries for horses 3 years old or older.

The BMW races are based on weight for age. You will find various weights competing from the lightest at around 52k’s to the heaviest at 59kg’s in the standard weight for age scale.

The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival takes place in March and April, and so the BMW race falls part of and is one of the main features of this popular carnival. There are also other races that take place on the day including Group 1 Vinery Club Stakes, Group 2 Tulloch Stakes, Group 2 Emancipation Stakes, Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes, Group 3 TL Baillieu Handicap and the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes. The BMW Stakes as well as the Golden Slipper races also feature.

BMW Winners & Prize Money

The BMW horse races in Rosehill, along with its popularity across the globe, have welcomed some of the best contenders throughout the years. The prize money is around $1.5 million. Some of the biggest names in the industry have taken first prize including Trissaro in 1983, Bonecrusher in 1986, Beau Zam in 1988, Our Poetic Prince in 1989, Octagonal in 1996/7, Might and Power in 1998, Tie the Know in 1999 and 2000, Makybe Diva in 2005, Eremein in 2006 and Fiveandahalfstar in 2013.

When betting on a horse it’s a good idea to note that for the last 20 years the BMW first prize winner has, on 11 occasions, come from Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.
